MTV Xbox 360 Special Recap

At 9:30 PM EST on May 12th, 2005 the Xbox 360 was officially unveiled on MTV in a 30-minute special. Much like Spike TV's dreadful Video Game Awards, they forgot to actually include any games in their TV show about video games. That isn't entirely true, but less than five minutes of game footage in a 30 minute program is a major bummer.

It wasn't all bad, however. In between the celebrities, musical performances by The Killers, and the Pimp My Ride guys, a few tiny tidbits of information managed to slip through.

It was confirmed that the faceplate of the system itself will be removable so you can attach any color or design you want. Rather than pulling a Nintendo and having a bunch of different colored systems all at full price, you can buy one Xbox 360 and make it whatever color you want with a new faceplate. It is sort of goofy and not all that important in the grand scheme of things, but I like it.

A handful of games were featured on the show including 2K Sports’ NBA 2K6; Activision's Call of Duty 2 and Tony Hawk’s American Wasteland, along with id Software’s QUAKE 4; Electronic Arts’ Madden NFL 06, Need for Speed Most Wanted and Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 06; Majesco Entertainment’s The Darkness; Microsoft Game Studios’ Perfect Dark: Zero, Kameo: Elements of Power, Project Gotham Racing 3 and Gears of War; THQ Inc.’s Saint’s Row; and Ubisoft Entertainment’s Ghost Recon 3. It is expected that most of these games will be released on or around the November launch of the Xbox 360.

The footage of these games, unfortunately, consisted of only a few seconds of each game and it wasn't a very good demonstration of what the Xbox 360 will really be capable of.

It seems to me that a show intended to get people interested in the Xbox 360 should focus more on the games than anything else. Instead of that, however, we got 30 minutes of celebrities telling us how great the Xbox 360 is going to be. Please, in the future, don't tell us, show us how great something is going to be. We still don't have a firm release date or any information on pricing or bundles (with and without the hard drive ...?) so we'll have to wait until E3 to get the rest of the story from Microsoft directly.
