Destroy All Humans: Path of the Furon Review (X360)

About.com Rating two out of Five

The original Destroy All Humans was a fairly entertaining romp through classic 1950’s sci-fi clichés where alien probes, mind reading, and pop culture references made for a pretty funny game. It was rather shallow, however, and the jokes and gameplay wore out their welcome surprisingly quickly. That was fine for one game, but here we are a few years and two sequels later and DAH just isn’t interesting anymore. Read our full review of Destroy All Humans: Path of the Furon right here.
Quick Hits

  • Title: Destroy All Humans! Path of the Furon
  • Publisher: THQ
  • Developer: Sandblast
  • ESRB Rating: “T” for Teen
  • Genre: Open World Adventure
  • Pros: Occasionally funny; decent voice acting
  • Cons: Awful graphics; series stopped being fresh and interesting about 30 mins into the original …

The first DAH took place in the 1950’s. The sequel in the 1960’s. And, you guessed it, Path of the Furon takes place in the 1970’s in locations such as Vegas and Hollywood among others. The story is more than just about collecting human DNA this time around, however, as our heroes Pox and Crypto stumble upon a conspiracy stemming from their own home planet.

Gameplay

Of course, no matter what the story behind it, the objective in these games is to, literally, Destroy All Humans. This is where Path of the Furon ultimately fails, unfortunately. In the first game, shooting people with anal probes, reading their minds, making them dance and act foolishly, etc. were all fun and interesting because it was fresh. Here we are years later, and the gameplay hasn’t changed much which means it isn’t all that much fun anymore.

THQ
In truth, the core gameplay is actually fairly solid. The controls are responsive and fairly intuitive whether you are on foot or flying around in your flying saucer, so you aren’t ever fighting the controls. The game also gives you a fairly nice arsenal of upgradeable weaponry to use. The problem, as I alluded to above, is that all of this is so old hat at this point it is just boring. Shooting people with anal probes isn’t funny anymore. Reading peoples’ minds or making them disco dance isn’t funny anymore. And it is just plain unfortunate that despite the large arsenal of weapons, the best weapons you have are what you start the game with and upgrade along the way. The game just gets repetitive really quickly, and that is never a good thing.

It has to be said, though, that if this is your first Destroy All Humans game, you’ll probably like it a lot more than series vets. It’ll still get old pretty fast, but at least the anal probings will be hilarious for a while.

Graphics and Sound

Graphically, Path of the Furon is pretty darn terrible looking. The framerate is awful during gameplay and even stutters during cutscenes. The textures on the buildings and environment are low-res and don’t look like they belong anywhere near the Xbox 360. There is also an incredible amount of pop in and buildings and other objects poof into existence right in front of you. The characters also look completely awful and the animation is jerky at best. Was this supposed to be a Wii game or something?

On the other hand, the sound is generally okay. Okay music. Okay sound effects. Okay dialogue. Crypto’s one liners get old pretty quickly, but his Jack Nicholson-style delivery is spot on. I also have to say that I’m a fan of Pox, and I’d listen to Richard Steven Horvitz (Invader Zim, Raz in Psychonauts) say pretty much anything and love it.

Bottom Line

THQ
All in all, Destroy All Humans: Path of the Furon is a pretty massive disappointment. Awful graphics and presentation paired with repetitive, dull gameplay make for a pretty lousy game no matter how you slice it. Skip it.
